Univention Bugzilla – Bug 30146
Documentation of limits/restrictions for server and school-ou names
Last modified: 2013-06-07 21:39:23 CEST
Ticket#: 2013011421000721 The documentation should contain some recommendation on how to choose "correct" OU and server names, which limitations/restrictions exists (e.g. length of names, special characters, ...) etc.
The current manual mentions the example schoolname gymnasium-mitte, which is not a valid name due to the dash '-' character
Florian, can you please add a list of restrictions to this bug, that are enforced by the UMC modules?
The school OU can consist of A-Z a-Z 0-9 and _ but can not start or end with _. There is no restriction of the length. In general there are these rules for the restriction of a server(host)name: Hostnames can start with a-z, can consists of a-z 0-9 and - and can only end with a-z 0-9. A NetBIOS hostname cannot be longer than 13 characters, in UCS@School actually 12 characters (because we are creating slave objects with a suffix).
Hints have been added in admin manual at slave installation and OU setup.
Fail (checked against Florians comment 3): - The name entered in the UMC is restricted to the length of 12 characters - The hostname may ONLY start with a-z Please use the same wording in both paragraphs about the hostname to avoid reader confusion
(In reply to Erik Damrose from comment #5) > Fail (checked against Florians comment 3): > - The name entered in the UMC is restricted to the length of 12 characters Ok, this was a confusion on my side. I thought UMC allows 13 characters and creates also a slave object for the non-edu network by appending "v" to its name. Since the non-edu DC may also use a different name, this won't be a real problem. → updated manual to "length of 12 characters" > - The hostname may ONLY start with a-z Fixed.
