Univention Bugzilla – Bug 51571
Make Ubuntu Clients usable with even some UCS@school components
Last modified: 2022-11-04 12:12:23 CET
As we did with UCC some customers still have UCC and were using it as described in the manual with some components/modules of ucs@school, like computerroom. At the moment neither UCC3 clients are shown in any ucs@school module or the the normal computermodule, nor they have a school role. At least this should work with Ubuntu clients again, so it is possible to meaningful use Ubuntu clients.

Do mean in the computers/computer UMC-Module neither? > > At least this should work with Ubuntu clients again, so it is possible to > meaningful use Ubuntu clients. Will Ubuntu clients not appear in the computers/computer UMC-Module or just not in the UCS@school-Modules? What exactly is meant by "meaningful use"? What exactly are the use cases? Simply displaying the clients will probably not be enough? Probably certain functions like "internet blocking" etc. should work?

This is in my testenvironment the case, that you can only see the UCCs in the ldap directory. Ubuntu Clients in a fresh installed School, could be added and are shown in computers/computer module but not in the school computers module. I think the customer expects that he can use the school features as he could do with UCC.
I suggest to make the "filter" used in the UMC module configurable in UCR, so experienced customers can activate Ubuntu Clients (and even more) and check by themself what works and what not. In parallel we can start to document how to get basic functionality and decide step by step how much is supported.
Now with UCS5 Ubuntu Clients in school, using the computer room is not possible with Ubuntu Clients see Bug 55386 I told the customer that we do not support Ubuntu clients in School. The customer reacted with great astonishment and horror. We have two or three schools with Linux cabinets that work intensively with it and convey the open source idea to the students. We don't see the inclusion of Linux PCs via the LDAP route as an ideal way either. We assumed that there was just a "tag" missing for the Ubuntu clients to enable the functionality to add Linux PCs via the normal GUI way. So if we understand you correctly, only Windows and MAC PCs are supported in computer rooms, but the actual open source systems Linux are not. Is that correct?
