Univention Bugzilla – Bug 51901
Hostname length
Last modified: 2020-08-28 15:18:55 CEST
Hostname length is hard coded to 13 characters maximum. If this is intentional (which I can't imagine why it would be) there should be a warning on the page asking for the hostname.
Possibly allow normal Linux hostname lengths when asking for a hostname
See Bug #30225 for an explanation on why 13 characters.
So basically the best option is to artificially limit our options instead of letting us provide a shorter name for samba. makes sense.
AFAICS the installer only warns if I use longname1234567890. The popup shows two buttons: "Adjust hostname" and "Continue". The latter allows me to continue with the software selection. FYI: Apart from installation, the Univention Management Console and Univention Directory Manager allow creating machine identity accounts with hostnames up to 63 characters. That's the default limit of the UDM syntax "hostName". If you can clarify your request feel free to reopen the bug report with additional information.
