Ich hatte ein KVM Instanz mit einer vda und einer sda Platte. Die Installation von UCS 3.0 wurde auf sda vorgenommen, vda wurde NICHT initialisiert (MBR) und partitioniert. 

Das Bootloader Device wird mittlerweile durch scripts/02_disk_check.sh automatisch ermittelt. In diesem Fall hat es aber wohl /dev/vda als Ziel für den GRUB ermittelt. grub-install auf das Device geht aber schief bis nicht mindestens eine Partition auf dem Gerät vorhanden ist:

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk.  This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: embedding is not possible, but this is required for cross-disk install.

Zumindest dies sollte in scripts/02_disk_check.sh beachtet werden. 

Bei der Installation mit mehreren Platten kommt hinzu, dass das Gerät auf dem der Grub installiert wird ja nicht zwingenderweise das Gerät ist, von dem gebootet wird. Im obigen Beispiel habe ich vda dann nachträglich partitioniert und den grub installiert. Gebootet wird das System von KVM/libvirt aber von sda. Da dort kein grub installiert wurde, bootet das System dann nicht.

Bei VMware/KVM beobachtet:

Maschine besitzt zwei Festplatten. Beide werden bei der Installation initialisiert (MBR). Wird das komplette System auf der zweiten Festplatte installiert und GRUB auf der ersten, dann startet das System danach nicht.

Bei 2x SCSI in VMware bleibt der Bildschirm lediglich schwarz beim starten.
Bei einem IDE/SCSI-Gemisch (VMware) erscheint GRUB mit folgender Meldung:

error no such partition.
Entering rescue mode...

This issue has been filed against UCS 3. UCS 3 is out of the normal maintenance and many UCS components have vastly changed in UCS 4.

If this issue is still valid, please change the version to a newer UCS version otherwise this issue will be automatically closed in the next weeks.

This issue has been filed against UCS 3.0.

UCS 3.0 is out of maintenance and many UCS components have vastly changed in later releases. Thus, this issue is now being closed.

If this issue still occurs in newer UCS versions, please use "Clone this bug" or reopen this issue. In this case please provide detailed information on how this issue is affecting you.
