Cloned a VM from the 3.1-1 Generic Template.
To test domain join of an updated system, I needed to skip the domain join during the customization step.
It would be nice to have a button "skip join" in addition to "canel" and "continue".
The current work-around is to enter no credentials, which also seems to skip the domain join. At least I received a success message.

The new appliance wizard has a skip join checkbox.
