While the vmware image is booting the bootsplash stops working. After removing /etc/init.d/S03udev the bootsplash works like expected.

It works if vmwgfx is blacklisted:
 ucr set kernel/blacklist="$(ucr get kernel/blacklist);vmwgfx"

This erratum was resolved w/o a fixed package. Marking the bug as closed, so that it doesn't show up in the list of to-be-released packages.
