Univention Bugzilla – Bug 47330
Booting via UEFI from USB was not possible
Last modified: 2019-06-12 16:55:01 CEST
Feedback at Ticket#2018070121000234 A user tried to install UCS on bare metal without DVD drive. He used USB stick instead. UEFI boot did not work. Instead the user followed the instructions at https://help.univention.com/t/uefi-boot-variable-prefix-isnt-set/5363/13 The expected behavior is to simply copy the ISO image to USB stick, select the stick as boot device and run the installation this way. +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #39009 +++ Ticket #2015061121001123 A customer reported that booting via UEFI was not possible: The installation failed on a Lenovo Thinkserver TD200x with Serveraid BR10i SAS RAID-Hostadapter with LSI 1068i based chipset. The deactivation of UEFI was not successful so the customer created a bootable USB stick from our installation ISO without /efi/boot, so the legacy boot process was chosen by the server. UEFI problem reported by the customer: > Meldung: eine Prefix-Variable ist nicht gesetzt und 4 devices sind nicht vorhanden. The prefix error happens on (nearly) all systems and is usually no real problem. We do not have further information.
Feedback from Ticket#2018062821000374 The user copied the ISO image to USB stick with UnetBootin and with Rufus. Both methodes yielded the same result. The bios menu offers UEFI mode or legacy mode. Both did not boot from USB stick. Running UEFI mode starts a grub console with prompt. The user did not write down the error message. In legacy mode only a black screen was shown.
Reported again at Ticket#2018092221000398.
Reported again for a DELL PowerEdge R740xd. The customer tried using a USB Stick and also tried via vnc console as virtual drive. Unfortunately I do not have the error message from grub.
I guess it's more like 5 to 25% affected domains so I reduce it to "2: Will only affect a few installed domains".
